It’s been a month and a half of carrying not only just my home on my back, but everything I need to survive in every type of weather the east coast can throw at me. Before I write about today I thought I would give a few fun stats on my adventure so far. Keep in mind on a hike like this it takes at least the first 2-3 weeks to get situated and settle into the very unique lifestyle. Days: 45
Average miles per day: 27
Most miles in one day: 44
Least miles in one day: 11
Average calories per day (approx): 6000
Weight lost: 13 pounds
Weight left to lose: 0
Number of showers taken: 10
Number of times clothes were washed: 6
Low temperature: -15
High Temperature: 79 Today I woke up under an overpass near a state park. It is where I chose to sleep in order to avoid the possible snow storm in the middle of the night. Luckily there was a climb to the top of the ridge to begin the day and it gave me the change to get warmed up in the 30 degree weather. Up down and over many rocks of all shapes and sizes until I reached the 11 mile mark and thought how much I would enjoy coffee, breakfast and figuring out why my camera battery keeps dying. With all these factors a quick stop in town was inevitable. On the trail I don’t even follow the days of the week unless planning which day to arrive at a post office and I didn’t even realize it was the Sunday before Easter. Ironically I ended up at a small coffee/breakfast spot with a group doing a worship service. They invited me in and fed me for only the price of my stories. They were incredibly generous and great to entertain with a few minutes of stories but alas i had to keep moving north. I took a coffee to go and before I knew it, it was late afternoon. The day and the miles flew by. My theory for this is the fact that the majority of the day was spent in a thick, unchanging forest of pine trees accentuated by deciduous trees. Yes there have finally begun to pine trees in these forests. With another day of thirty plus miles I have begun to notice how perfectly adjusted to walking I have become.
