24 miles to Donner Pass was on the agenda, and then I could take the afternoon and the next morning off. It was somewhat of a rest day to recover from the long days through the snow that have been taking place. The trail traveled up and down, passing picturesque ridges, ski resorts and geological features. There was some snow on Tinkers Knob and Anderson Peak, with some of it relatively steep. It was like being excited to get somewhere, only to have speedbumps and obstacles blocking the way to the goal. Then I hit Donner Summit, the same Donner of the Donner party story involving eating each other. At the Summit, waiting, were the parents of the girl that jumped up to hike with me a few more days. Jess’ parents took us into town and even ran by Dairy Queen to satisfy an ice cream craving of mine. Then the fun began. We drove through town to the house of some of the greatest trail angels I have ever met. They are friends more than trail angels. In 2016, I was connected to the Vilbig’s through a childhood friend’s parents and they took great care of me. This year they invited me back and we both stayed the night. There was great food, beer, and every amenity you could think of, including more ice cream. We had an awesome dinner, and then the photo album came out from when Val and Rick climbed Mt. Whitney in 1992. There were lots of laughs and a great time with some of my favorite people. Tomorrow will be a bit of a lazy morning, although I’m sure I won’t be able to sleep passed 5:30, and then a resupply from the store, a mission to find new socks in town, and then back to the trail for more hiking around noon. Today was a great day!
