Favorite meal: authentic New Mexican food in Cuba I woke up at 10k feet for probably the last time on this trip. I wines all night but luckily it was over by the time I got out of bed and began the 15 mile climb down into town. I love that short sections because I can carry very little food but also eat well. There were lots of switchbacks and then joined a road I would follow the rest of the way into town. Cuba was one of the poorest towns I have ever seen. I got chased by wild dogs half a dozen times and saw houses that were barely standing but the people were very nice. One very poor man said he was proud and excited what I was doing and another man graciously gave me his lunch and insisted i take it. I think we can learn a lot from those who don’t have much to give but still insist. The kindness was overwhelming. I finished the day by walking through an incredible section that looked as though dinosaurs should live there. Sand, rock, clay and small caves and canyons were all over. I ended up camping with a group of thru hikers. Four others headed southbound. It was ice to be able to converse with people doing a similar thing since it has been such a long time.
